Background: 27M, Ivy League Econ degree, no money to my name
After a 4-year stint in NYC as an independent filmmaker, I was forced to move back in with my parents for financial reasons. Throughout the entire journey, I was working part-time jobs to support myself and never had enough money to build a healthy lifestyle. I saw countless relationships fail and lived in poor conditions, and always questioned whether or not I made the right choice, but consoled myself with idea that I was following my passion and that was what was important. I ended up successfully producing a short film, but haven’t done much since.
Fast forward to today, and a mixture of frustration and disillusion caused me to apply to a number of finance positions thinking maybe it's time to hang everything up take better care of myself. Most of the entry-level analyst positions, regardless of city, are off limits to me because of my unconventional career path. I've received countless rejections. But a private equity internship offer came through, and while I was originally excited about it as a necessary stepping stone, after interviewing I discovered it wasn't so rose-colored.
It's a small search fund with one MBA and two interns who are students. The position is a 3-month commitment capped at 15hrs/wk because the MBA doesn’t want to babysit too much, and to the best of my knowledge, there is no opportunity to perform well and get hired/paid full-time afterward. This means that I am relying solely on the limited exposure I get there to jump to an analyst position at in IB, PE, or a hedge fund, and most of my connections in these industries agreed that it wouldn’t be nearly enough. On top of this, it means relocating to NYC, living on a friend’s couch for 3 months, and working for somebody who doesn’t really seem to value their interns to begin with, rather seeing them as a necessary nuisance.
What do I do? Do I suck it up and take it? Or dig down and persevere and produce another film? Any advice is appreciated.
