Hi everyone, I desperately need advice and I never thought this situation would ever happen to me. I had my first day of work today and need advice on how to quit. As a background, the main reasons for me quitting are that my parents object to my job because they don't think I'm getting paid enough ($15/hr) to tutor kids in coding, it's a good 30 minute drive w/o traffic and almost an hour drive w/ traffic so they don't think the pay makes up for the gas cost, and because they're worried that the job will distract from my studies since it'll take a lot of time commuting. Additionally, I'm in college currently as a Computer Science major and they don't think this job adds anything to my resume and won't help me get a job after graduation. (I don't know how true this is since they don't know a lot about the computer science industry and seem to have some misconceptions about the industry as well.) Also I'm quite annoyed because they were fine initially with me taking this job, but after hearing the pay, they raised all hell and practically demanded I quit. They told me that they only agreed initially because they though I was going to be paid more. I think the job is pretty cool because I get to mentor/tutor kids that are creating an app to solve a societal/community problem for a competition. However, with all the reasons my parents gave and because I am financially dependent on them/it's their car, I'm afraid I have to quit after only one day of work.
So I need advice on how to quit. I can only contact my boss through Slack and don't have her number. Additionally, I'm only slated to come to work on Tuesdays and Saturdays so I'm not sure how well asking for a in-person meeting to quit would work, especially since I don't want to drive 30 minutes to an hour just to let her know I'm quitting. Should I message my boss to ask for a time to set up a phone call? I feel like it wouldn't be appropriate to let her know via Slack.
Additionally, how do I phrase my situation the best way possible. I know this is already a shitty situation but I feel horrible about quitting after the first day. Should I offer to come in for 1-2 more weeks to give them time to find someone else? It would be super awkward for me to do that, but I just feel so terrible about this situation that I don't know how to approach it. I also don't know how to approach money either because I got a t-shirt to wear for work which I was told would come out of my first paycheck (cost would be $20). I honestly don't care about getting paid for only one day of work, but is it alright to assume that it would be okay not to mention paying $20 for the shirt if I don't get paid for my one day of work?
Any advice is much appreciated. Thank you!
