Going from full time software engineer to UX design intern

I’m currently a full time software engineer at a big company but am unhappy with my company culture, and lack of opportunity for growth/learning in the company. I’ve been itching to try out UX design. Nothing has come out of me reaching out within the company but I’ve come across a few good internships in the surrounding area. Should I “demote” from full time employee to intern? I’m quite young (early 20s) and am hungry for work experience.
