Future boss sent me a congratulations before I even received the offer... is this normal?

I've been interviewing with a company through a recruiter, and after the second interview my recruiter said they would like to make me an offer. They've indicated several times that they would, including the hiring manager in the interview.

All I told the recruiter is that I'm interested in reviewing the offer and would be excited to work for them if hired.

My boss sent me this (via email):

"Welcome aboard!  I am very excited to have you join our team.  Don’t bring a lunch on your first day, we will take you out.

See you soon!"

I haven't even seen an offer yet, let alone accepted one. I sent this back:

"Thank you very much. I'm excited to have this opportunity! Still haven't received an offer yet, but I appreciate the sentiment."

I hope I wasn't too harsh. Perhaps there was a miscommunication somewhere and he thought I already received an offer and accepted.

Was I right to be cautious in my response? I feel like it's way too early to consider me part of the team.
