I was interviewing for a customer service role on the railway station, and we were discussing safe and unsafe work environments.
I currently work as a checkout worker. I mentioned safe work environments being where the worker is physically comfortable, no risk of injury, but unsafe work environments are the opposite eg, we had an elderly team member go to hospital for longer term because standing in one spot and lifting bags for too long was bad for her wrists. The store responded by giving us cushy Matt’s to stand on and installing a different model of checkouts where we don’t lift bags anymore and she’s “safe” from risks of injury now.
The interviewer asked about abusive customers in regards to “safety”, I mentioned a story concerning the recent free plastic bag ban which customers responded to terribly, I mentioned one customer demanded a free bag (rather than pay a dollar for a fabric one), got verbally abusive, clenched his fist (I said I thought he was about to punch me), but I held strong, (was also under strict instructions from the store manager) , also seeing in my side vision that had attracted the attention of the security guard who was walking towards us.
I realised the right thing to do, looking back, was to probably have given the customer the bag for free for “safety” reasons although obviously I didn’t want to lie about that experience. I then said having a security guard means I feel we have a safe work environment because the protection exists.
Idk, I feel uneasy, I p really want the job, do you think this question relating to safety probably killed my chances? All the other interview answers they seemed to really like. Such as giving an example of going above and beyond for customers, complying dedicatedly with ID checks for selling alcohol, working in a team etc
The outcome of the interview I should hear on Monday but post interview anxiety is horrible (I think it’ll be pretty close as to whether or not I passed or flunked)
