I work in a University as contractual (6 months renewal) non-academic staff. My primary task is to create documents, RFP's, official communication etc. Over the years I have prepared a lot of documents for my boss as besides the present job he regularly does consultancy work for other organisations and assigns that work to university staff under him. It all started with a little help when he was struggling with a document and slowly became an additional work responsibility for me. Many other colleagues also do his personal work on university time. Recently, I realised that it is never going to end, so I confronted him in front of my other colleagues and asked him for the money. He said he will think. Later on, he said that it was all help as he has been saving me from firing because I am incompetent and thus I was liable to work for him. He made it clear that I am not going to be paid for that. Indian service rules say that you can't do any external work than the institution you are working for so in a way I am also guilty. The legal route is long and tiring. What can be done about this?
