I posted this on r/personalfinance but got no reasonable response, so I'm posting this here...
A brief overview of my situation. I graduated with a bachelors in Fall 2008, couldn't find a job during the crisis so I started my own business. Made around $50-70k per year until about 2015 when my dad got cancer & I moved home to help out. I put my business on hold since then & was living off of savings which are now down to about $1k.
To complicate matters, in 2016 I had a ruptured disc out of nowhere which required spine surgery. I would say I'm mostly recovered by now, but life hasn't really been the same since before surgery. My physical dexterity is reduced, also, back pain sometimes hits me out of nowhere like a brick. In October, for example, I spent over a week in bed 23 hours of the day due to an episode of severe lower back pain.
So here I am, my dad is cancer free now, thank god. However, I'm 33 years old, with no savings, living with my parents & basically have never held a 9-5 job. I'm divorced too.
I should say that my business was related to my degree, it was an online marketing business. Since surgery & throughout recovery, I decided it would be best to expand on my online marketing skills by learning programming & web development. I've taken & passed Harvard's CS50 (Introduction to Computer Science & Programming) along with a few other paid courses. My original goal was to build my own product to sell, but in recent months it's become quite clear that I don't have enough money to launch another business. This hasn't stopped me from working on it, but the fact is that I can only go so far without cash to work with.
My first instinct is to find a job but, I'm worried about my injury. I'm currently on medicaid & having access to a doctor has been invaluable to me. There is an obvious weight restriction, I probably won't be able to bend over & pick things up all day or even stand in one spot all day. I have trouble enough sitting in one spot for most of the day, I have to stand up to walk around occasionally in order to get my legs feeling normal again. I do physical therapy exercises & stretches every morning to make sure I'm as pain free as possible.
The first problem I run into is that I have absolutely no clue where to start when it comes to looking for a job. I'm completely unprepared as I was always geared towards self employment. I fear that I may miss red flags when looking for a job or that I may interview poorly. Also, how do I translate self employment experience onto a resume?
My first choice of job would be web development related. This might not be realistic though. The problem is that the language I chose to build my product (Go) is a newer language while most webdev jobs use PHP, C# & Javascript. I do have experience with Javascript, but the product I'm currently working on doesn't use too much of it. I also have Linux experience as I use it on my workstation & the servers that I manage.
My biggest concern at the moment is my medicaid benefits. I'd like to either earn an amount to be able to keep them, or to earn enough to afford my own health insurance.
Any advice, information & resources are greatly appreciated. Thank you!
