A manufacturer called Graphic Packaging International. They hire through a temp company, but with no set time to get directly hired on. It is based on how well you do. One lady has been hired after 1.5 months and many others have. Temp pay is $10/hr. Direct hire pay goes up to $18.65/hr. They're a union, so you apparently pay like 10% union dues. The recruiter said that's the biggest jump in pay that he has ever seen and I agree.

I had orientation last week. The company safety director who has been with the company a long time said they have probably interviewed 400 people this year and he can't figure out why they keep losing people. They do generally work 50-hour weeks spread over 4 days. However, there are some people that work 5, 6 or 7 12-hour days some weeks. He said that it isn't because they're getting orders that they can't keep up with, but rather, the company employees are trying to make up for all of the missing temp workers who keep leaving. A "normal" week is 50 hours. They get the $28/hr overtime for anything over 40 hours. So the people working 6 days per week are making over $1,400 for the week before taxes and union dues. That's not too shabby. We were told during orientation last week that we would find out when we would start next week because they were literally expecting some more of those employees on the machines to quit so that we could take their place. The temp recruiter told us all, "If you feel that this may not be for you, let me know and I can find you something else."

I see nothing wrong with the company so far. I'm looking for a career and a long-term employer. My orientation consisted of 10 people, for instance. The staffing company recruiter stated that "among the 10 of us there, probably 3 of us will actually be left working." It sounded as if most won't come to work on time, won't do the job, etc. Unlike a lot of warehouses, this one seems to be heated and has air conditioning. The shifts are long, but we saw the machines and they're not running that fast. My shift would be 7am to 7pm. Just forming machines that make the boxes for fast food restaurants (burger boxes, etc.). You load four rows of small boxes into the feeder on one end and then grab them at the other end of the machine and pack/seal them in boxes to be put onto a pallet. The boxes aren't heavy, either. There is no heavy lifting.

20-minute lunch break and a 10-minute break every 2 hours. So lunch and the breaks are all paid for and you get the straight 12 hours. You can't leave the building or go anywhere (timers on the outer doors), no smoking anywhere, etc. Typical hairnet/earplugs/safety glasses/steel toe boots warehouse.

Why would you suppose they lose so many employees for that kind of money? A lot of the seasoned employees have been there for 20-30+ years. Is it the temp starting pay? The union fees? No smoking? Steel toe boots? Can't leave the building? Some of the guys in my orientation laughed and said they'd love the overtime. As soon as we got out of there, I heard one as I was leaving...he was already wanting to go try another agency for some reason. He wanted to work that night for some reason. Very odd.
