How do I talk about lapses in full time work in an interview?

I had a very successful career in academia as a scientist for almost a decade. In 2014 I basically had a nervous breakdown due to some personal trauma and left my job and moved to be closer to my support system. I worked at a nonprofit completely unrelated to my field for a year while I half-heartedly looked for a relevant job. I then found a part time position teaching at a community college, where I have been continuously employed for the past 2.5 years (minus a semester in the middle for maternity leave).

I have not really looked for full time work yet for several reasons: I absolutely love my job, the college led me to believe that a full time position would likely come available soon, I was diagnosed with some health issues that have 100% been taken care of and are no longer a problem, but I had to have several surgeries and needed the flexibility this job provided, and I had a baby.

The college did end up hiring a full time faculty member, however not in a field I am qualified to teach. Although I do love this work, it pays crap and I have a family to help support. It's time for me to move on, and I have found a few jobs that I am very enthusiastic about applying to.

If/when I get an interview, how do I address this if it is brought up? I feel confident that I can explain leaving an academic research track because it's pretty universally known to be a shit show, but I'm worried about how to talk about the time I've spent since then.

As a side note, I don't have any experience with the job market outside of academia, but I know the rules are different. If anyone has general advice or an information source on how to transition it would be appreciated.

TIA
