Ethics of working for a payday lender?

Hello all,

I recently moved to take a new job as a software developer; however that job ended up not being what was promised. It pays well and the job is stable, but the work is not what was promised (it's more webDev than devOps, nothing against webDev it's just not what I want to do). So I contacted a recruiter and they said they found a spot that fit my skillset at a loan provider.

Well, I thought they meant something like mortgages, but when I had my first meeting with my potential hiring manager (which was over lunch that he paid for, which was nice) it turns out that it's all payday and title loans. It IS the work I want to do and the pay is good, but the industry concerns me.

I have heard a lot of the arguments both ways for payday loans. On the one hand, they are preying on poor people, charging outrageous interest, and continuing a cycle of poverty. On the other, it's not like borrowers don't know what they're getting into, it's supposed to be pretty short term, they need to get that money somehow (better than the mob), and the interest rate is nuts because the default rate is also nuts.

I don't NEED this job, but it would be good for my career. I'm just on the fence about working for the industry. Will I be total scum for contributing anyway, there's no ethical consideration for aforementioned reasons, or the industry might be bad as a whole but I shouldn't worry about it because this place might be fine?

What would you do in my shoes?
