Dealing with culture shock in a new workplace

Hey guys,

I just recently started a new job. I moved from a medium sized city to a much larger city. I’m having a unique experience at my new job and was hoping some of you might have some insight or advice.

My new company has a very strong Indian presence. One of our founders is of Indian descent and we have a large office in India. I have a great respect for the Indian culture and its people, but my exposure to them is very limited. My team consists of 95% Indian expats, and I am just some white boy from Appalachia. I am particularly having a hard time understanding some of my coworkers, as some of their accents are very strong. And on top of that, some of my coworkers speak to each other in different languages (possibly Hindi?) which just confuses me even further. I am worried that I will have a hard time communicating with them until I get fully used to it. I want to minimize mistakes as I’m starting out and proper communication is important for that. I am also having trouble remembering all of these unique names. I don’t want to fuck up someone’s name and offend them. I also have concerns that I will have trouble fitting in with my team. I don’t want to be an outcast. I’m extremely open to new cultures and being a member of a greatly diverse workplace, but I’m scared I might have bitten off more than I can chew. I don’t want to burn out quickly.

I’m not sure if culture shock is the right term to use here, but I haven’t felt this out of my comfort zone since I studied abroad in college. Being in a new place and dealing with a completely unfamiliar culture is pretty daunting. I really want to do my best and become the best employee I can be while building great relationships with coworkers, but this challenge is just so new to me that I don’t exactly know how to approach it. Is there anything I can do to make the adjustment process easier or will it just get better over time? I’d really appreciate any advice, especially speaking from previous experience.
