So I’m a senior in college, finishing in May. I’ve had an internship position before and I absolutely loved it but it was unpaid. They hired me afterwards for a paid position but about two months in the department closed because of COVID.
I figured it would be a good idea to find another internship for my last semester of college. I’d hope it could evolve into a full-time position for me to take upon graduation.
I’ve applied for about 120 internships. Made a strong resume, portfolio, and cover letters. I submit writing samples I’ve gotten A’s on. I had a dream position in mind, and connected with EVERYONE I could find on LinkedIn who worked there and sent them all messages about how if they could assist me in any way I’d be so grateful as I saw myself to be a perfect fit, with a proper background and prior job experience. I made it to the recruiter’s phone screening, and he was using language insinuating I was moving forward.
Long story short, I didn’t. They didn’t want me because of my location, even though it was advertised as able to be completed remotely. I’m so angry and upset because I really thought I would be the best person for the job.
The other 119 internships? I’ve received about 60 rejections. I had an interview back in October for one, and they wanted to continue but I didn’t see myself as a good fit because the interviewer basically told me I wouldn’t be making much money, so I withdrew. I had another recruiter phone screening but I was sick with the flu so I didn’t do my best. I’m getting ghosted left and right.
I’m heartbroken over this. Everyone on social media seems to be so successful and happy, landing dream jobs/internships, while I utterly failed. I haven’t felt this discouraged in years. I’m definitely not going to get a position by the middle of January at this rate. I’m not having much hope about getting a job post-grad at this point either.
I go to an impressive college, have a 3.5 GPA, participate in clubs, went to community college and was apart of two honors societies, have lots of volunteer experience, managerial experience, technical skills, and I’m a hard worker. Why can’t I get an internship in the Communication industry?
