“Why do you want this position, you seem to be a bit overqualified?”

Long story short, I moved to San Antonio for one plan that ultimately fell through and am here at least until June 2022. I have a BS in Bio and I am applying to various research assistant/technician positions and really any position my degree qualifies me for.

The first couple positions I applied to took a month to reply so in the meantime I’m trying to get some part time work.

My question is: If an employer asks “why did you apply to this position, you seem a bit overqualified” how do you respond?

For example, if you respond, “I’m trying to get some part time work until I secure a full time position” they obviously won’t hire you because that would be risking resources training you.

I’m in a predicament because I need money but the only positions aside from retail and food services in SA that hire quickly have asked / will ask me this question during interviews.

Nothing against food service or retail, it’s just I’ve worked those jobs before college and would ideally prefer not to work in those roles again. And I have applied to GrubHub delivery, just waiting for my card and delivery box to come in.
