Hello Reddit,
I've got an interesting situation and I thought I world turn to the internet to get other peoples thoughts. So, I have applied to two similar jobs on Indeed, both sales, for two seemingly different marketing/sales companies and have begun the interview/hiring process for one of them. But, either something isn't right or I am just paranoid. Basically, I'm wondering if this seems shady or if it's all rather harmless?
What is interesting to me is that when looking at the job posts the role descriptions are similar enough where something seems strange but they aren't verbatim copies of each other. Further raising an eyebrow, on the job postings Company A is said to be in Town #1 and Company B is listed as in town #2, but the hiring manager for Company B said they are actually located in Town #1. So, I do some digging and Company A and Company B were incorporated on the same date, a few months ago, and are listed as having the same address with the only difference being the registered agent. When going on Indeed, supposedly Company A reached out but I was only contacted by Company B which makes me think that these two companies are related.
Interestingly, the hiring manager said the company is worldwide yet why can't I find a website and why was incorporation so recent? This makes me conclude that both companies are either in collaboration or are the same organization and something shady is going on. At the very least the truth is being bent. This seems like a strange coincidence but I'm inclined to think that these two companies are actually just one organization. So, why would one organization post two job openings that are practically the same but do so through two different business entities?
Additionally, the job postings weren't lying about the job per se but left much open to interpretation. For one, the job is supposed to entail managing Company B's accounts/customers but in actuality it is a outsourced sales job. Also, the company says that you're working with fortune 500 companies but actually the fortune 500 just outsourced their sales work to Company B and what you're actually doing is pushing their products through leads from the fortune 500 company. Honestly, something just seems off and I'm wondering if anyone else has any insights?
What I think may be going on is that the company is legit and the manager was telling the truth but that the situation is similar to Amazon's independent delivery contractors. There is likely one large umbrella marketing company that has schemes for employees to start their own business and gain contracted work dealing with large corporations through the umbrella company. But, instead of outsourcing deliveries like Amazon, the umbrella company outsources sales work. With this, the umbrella company may very well be international and long established but the contracted company, company B, is newly established. I'll probably go through with the second round of interviewing but I'll definitely be suspicious.
TLDR: Started a rabbit hole with two job postings for similar roles and found out that the two companies were incorporated on the same day and have the same address. Began the interview process for one of the companies and the dots just aren't connecting through what the hiring manager says and what the incorporation data shows. Also, the job posting may have stretched the truth. Legit or something shady?
