Just got a job rejection call

Had a job interview 2 weeks ago and they said they would let me know by the end of next week. Last Friday they called but I missed it and that they wouldn't be at work until the week after, all the voicemail said was they had an update on the job and to call them back. I called them on Monday and Tuesday but they didn't pick up, he tried calling me this morning when I had class and his voicemail said the same thing. I thought if it wasn't a rejection there wouldn't be so much back and forth calling but we finally found a time to call and he said they went with a different candidate. :( it sucks but found the call to rejectunnecessary.... he could have just sent a rejection email.
