At my breaking point in my job search. I keep getting rejected and I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. Advice?
I graduated college in 2017 and have been working in my field since. I’ve been in my current position for almost 2 1/2 years now, but it really isn’t a good culture fit and the work is burning me out. In February, I began applying for jobs in a field adjacent to mine, figuring I had transferable skills. I landed a handful of interviews over the next few months, and made it to the final round of 3. I got an offer for one, which I turned down because it would have been a significant paycut. I made it to the final round of the other 2, but was rejected from both. I was able to get feedback from one, which was basically that they wanted to hire someone with less experience (assuming so they can pay them less). Other than that, they had only positive things to say about me. The other, I received a generic email, and was ignored when I asked for feedback. Feedback from other interviews were usually that my background was impressive, but they would have liked more real-world experience in the field.
I took a short break to reassess and decided to apply for jobs in my current field instead, where I have the most experience. I got several more first and second round interviews, and my ratio of applications to interviews became much higher. But I’m still being rejected and I haven’t been able to get any feedback at this point. Just yesterday I had a 2 hour virtual on-site final round, where I thought I got along well with everyone, but I just received a generic rejection email. I spent an entire weekend doing an assignment for them, too, so I’m super bummed. May have even cried a bit.
I used to think my interview skills were pretty good, but now I’m questioning everything. All of these interviews have been virtual, so I’m thinking that might be the issue, but I have had so much practice over the months. My partner works from home so he’s had a chance to overhear some of my interviews. When I asked him for honest advice about whether anything stuck out to him, he said I may not be selling myself enough, but nothing major.
I have a final interview this Friday for a role I’m super interested in. I’ve had 3 interviews and another weekend-long assignment for this one, but my confidence is completely shot reflecting on all the rejected I’ve faced during this process. I really want to nail this and be done with job hunting. My job is killing me and I’ve taken so much time out of my workday to attend all these interviews, so I’ve had to work harder to make up for the lost time and it’s burning me out even more.
