What is the shortest acceptable amount of time to have a non-professional job?

By non-professional jobs, I mean working for grocery stores, retail stores, pharmacies, fast food, etc. I've heard that working at these sorts of places for a year is short, so I'm uncertain. Is there an ideal amount of time that should be aimed for?
