Is this appropriate?

I am a grad student applying to jobs in my industry. I just applied to a position at a large industry firm where I’m familiar with someone who works in a different department. I know them from following their Twitter and speaking to them twice about their career and role. So we aren’t technically friends, more acquaintances I suppose?

Anyway, I wanted to know if it would be appropriate to tell them I’ve applied and ask if they’d be willing to pass my name along to the hiring manager. I’ve been told for years jobs are mostly acquired through who you know but I’ve never actually done that!

So, should I reach out?
