I recently moved from a low COL area to a high COL area for my partner’s career, and will be here no less than 3 years. I was able to convince my employer (Company A) to transfer me to a different role where I could WFH. I am very grateful to have gotten the WFH opportunity because my partner and I would have been in financial trouble otherwise and would have had a hard time affording an apartment. My WFH job pays alright for the low COL area we came from but not for the high COL area we moved to. It’s enough for us to get by while putting a little bit away into savings though. I asked Company A for a COL adjustment, but they declined.
I have been in the new role for the past few months but do not enjoy it and oftentimes find myself overwhelmed by and disengaged from it. The work I was doing before was more enjoyable but I was on site every day. Realistically, I could have gotten all my onsite work done being there 2-3 days/week while doing the rest of my work from home but this was before COVID so coming into the office was the norm.
I have been applying to jobs since I moved and got an offer (from Company B) for a position like my previous one. I think the Company B role would be more enjoyable and pays significantly more (38% raise). However, I have gotten used to the freedom of WFH. I do not want to commute to the office every day (1h 10m minimum) if my onsite tasks can be grouped together and completed by going in 2-3 days/week. Also my parent’s health has recently taken a turn for the worse and I need the flexibility to travel and work from home on short notice for a couple weeks at a time without worrying about losing my job.
I asked Company B about WFH/hybrid flexibility on several occasions throughout the hiring process, but their responses were cagey and unclear. The hiring manager (future boss) said it would be a conversation between management and employee. The director said it annoys him that he can’t go over to someone’s desk and ask them a question but WFH hasn’t hurt their profitability. Said that longer term strategy around hybrid flexibility hasn’t been established by corporate. The HR person said that the expectation was employees are back onsite when the site fully reopens.
When I pressed the issue to HR and the manager, I received a response about how Company B values the innovation and collaboration that comes with being onsite but also acknowledges the “relevance” of WFH. When they sent me an offer, I countered that I would like hybrid flexibility to WFH when tasks do not require my presence on site. They told me they couldn’t commit but the HR person made it sound like it would probably be fine even though the first time I asked they said it was expected I’d return to the office. When I asked the manager again about post-COVID flexibility, I got a canned response about how Company B values employee safety and how his management style allows people to manage their priorities with visibility and accountability. He said he expects flexibility to continue longer term but reiterated that it would be on a case-by-case basis and as agreed upon between management and employee.
I have been struggling about giving up my freedom for improved job satisfaction and more money. I accepted the position but with a lot of reservations and major concerns that when I start, they’ll pull the rug out from under me and ask me to be onsite every day and only allow WFH on the rarest of occasions. I haven’t told Company A yet and don’t want to burn the bridge with them. I planned on telling them this week and giving them until the end of the month before starting at Company B so I could transfer my projects. I asked Company B for an extension on my start date and they refused. Is this a red flag for future WFH/hybrid inflexibility? I’m considering declining the new position over it and have a bad taste in my mouth.
TLDR: Accepted a higher-paying job that I’d likely enjoy more but is less flexible than my current WFH job. The new company was cagey when I asked about hybrid flexibility and gave contradicting and unclear statements. Thinking about declining the job now that they aren’t allowing flexibility with my start date.
