I know the obvious answer for why I have a hard time getting hired is because I have crippling social anxiety and therefore are can’t network as well as others. I can also blame some of it on Covid, but all my friends have jobs and I’ve been either laid off, or had to quite for some reason.
I do work in a very liberal industry in a very liberal city. I don’t want my mind to go there, but after so many rejections or straight up ghosting I do start to wonder if part of the reason is because I’m a straight white male.
I really don’t like thinking this because it’s a slippery slope to white supremacy. But considering how much Incredible support there is out there for people to with diverse backgrounds to be given the opportunities they’ve been historically denied for so long, (especially in the industry I got a degree in) that I just have to wonder. Are companies not hiring me because they don’t want to appear bigoted?
The catch 22 is that you need experience to get work and you need work to get experience. The world has been creating a lot of opportunists for people with diverse background to get experience. Since I am the textbook definition of non diverse does that mean to should just stop trying?
I don’t like to think like this, but I know the world is not black and white, and I guess being white makes me feel like I have no place in it, and should stop trying to find one.
