Do they always cheer you on before they fire you?

So I was handed a PIp. The communication from my boss, feedback and training have been completely absent, granted it’s my first year at the company and it takes a while to understand exactly what your boss’s personality is and what do they want

Now she did mention I’m improving even as she sent me the horrid PIP, and now is trying to make plans with me for vacation, new projects etc.

But I hear there’s no way to pass a PIP. So why do they do this? Why do they become nice all of a sudden and communicative as if “they’re working to help achieve the level of excellence required” ?
