I’ll cut straight to it- I’m 17 and the legal amount of hours I’m meant to work in a day is 8 hours, today I basically did a 12 hour shift. You’re also meant to get a break every 4 hours for half an hour, in the entire time I was there I sat down twice for 10 minutes each, the rest of the shift I was on my feet with no breaks. In the original interview I was also told it was £9/hr, now that I’ve started it’s only £7/hr. they also told me in the original interview they’d break weddings up into 6 hour shifts with a morning and evening staff but instead they make everyone work the full thing. Today I ended up doing over 16,500 steps and my shoes are not built for this either so my feet are on fire. They also take forever to pay me. They never made me sign a contract either. I also ended up doing 3 hours of washing up all on my own because the other 4 servers didn’t want to do anything, even when I asked for help they never did. Also I should mention they haven’t hired anyone to do the washing up so as well as serving food and bringing plates back in the servers have to do the washing up too. Further more I was talking with another server and it turns out I’ve worked more hours than him yet he’s been paid way more than me at more like £9/hr.
My problem is I can’t leave until I find something new and it took me months in the first place to find this job. No one wants to hire under 18s unless they get to pay them bare minimum wage.
