How can you tell if a recruiter is being genuine with their disappointment when they reject you and when they are just being formal because they have to?

I've made it far in the interview process with two companies.

With the first, I was one step away from the final interview but she told me they made the 'difficult' decision to move forward with another candidate and that she would love to stay connected and was actually the one who sent me the LinkedIn request. Usually it seems the candidates have to reach out to the recruiters/interviewers afterwards.

In the second, I was told that I made it to the final interview, was in the process of scheduling it and then I get an email from the recruiter telling me she wished she had better news but the team had a 'change in direction' and would hold on hiring for this role. I sent the usual 'thanks anyway' spiel and asked if she had any feedback for me and she said, "the team was very interested in you and would of continued the process if the role wasn’t cancelled so I don’t think you needed to change anything."

Everyone says that recruiters use doublespeak and certain phrases and they aren't always telling the truth when they say these things and usually a 'different direction' just means an internal hire. These responses seem more genuine to me, but I don't know for sure. Are there any recruiters here or people familiar with these processes that have insight?

And further, if they truly are interested in staying connected with me what should I do to continue to stay on the radar without bothering them too much? I was very interested in both companies so I'd genuinely like another shot someday in the future but I don't know how I'd go about getting it.
