Why does it take several weeks or months even, between applying and starting your first shift?

I'm unemployed, and can't stand another day, let alone week just sitting around not earning zilch.

I just want a job, any job that I can start quickly and get my life together. But anytime I see a decent job I can probably get, I hesitate because I figure it's gonna be a month at best before they even hire me.

Is there any way to accelerate the whole hiring process?
