Just got turned down for a job I really want, but hiring manager said she was really impressed by me and wants me to reapply in a few months. How do I approach this?
TL;DR: applied to a job that sounds absolutely amazing (aligned with my skills, love the topic area, involved in great work) but was passed over for someone with more direct experience and knowledge in the field (vs. just the skillset). Hiring manager said she was really impressed by me and wants me to reach out in a few months as the team should be growing and more opportunities should be available. How do I respond to this email to set myself up for success? Also, I'm currently trying to move jobs soon because I hate my current job (and have a few potential prospects). What do I do?
---
I recently applied for a job at Company X that requires data analysis knowledge, but the field is geared towards social justice/social work. While I have some experience in that field from coursework and projects I've worked on here and there in an internship, I was ultimately passed over for someone with more direct experience working in the field.
The hiring manager said she was really impressed by me and that she had selected the other candidate because of their more relevant experience, but the team will hopefully be growing and she'd love for me to join if positions open up in a few months. Question 1: how do I respond? I want to express my interest in being considered down the line, but is it appropriate to ask "when would be a good time to check in?"
Two things: 1. I hate my current job and 2. I'm finishing up interviewing for other jobs that are interesting (but I'm not nearly as excited for, compared to this job I just got turned down from).
Because I hate my current job, I want to leave ASAP. The pay is good, but I hate the team, I'm not growing, and I don't like the work I'm being tasked with. If these interviews continue to go as well as they've been going, I think I'd receive an offer. I don't expect that I'll be paid as well as I currently am, but I think there would be a lot I'm gaining (opportunities to grow in my skills which are not offered in my current job, a new team, professional opportunities, etc.), so as long as the salary doesn't absolutely throw me off track, I'd be fine with a slight pay cut.
However, I'm really conflicted. Question 2: Assuming I receive an offer I'd otherwise accept, should I turn that down and wait a few more months and hope an opportunity opens up with this team, or should I accept a new job offer and forget about this opportunity? I feel like I'd honestly have a hard time letting it go, but I also don't know if I'd want to take a new job for a few months with the intention of leaving. I know it's every man for himself in the job market for our generation, but I'd feel like I'd be blacklisted from whichever company I pull that with (and these are pretty big companies).
I'm seriously conflicted and have no idea what to do. I'm sort of leaning towards taking whatever offer I receive now from my other prospects (as long as it's a good offer) and then jumping ship if the opportunity to join this team arises but would really appreciate any advice!
