Little info on me, I’m a recent graduate and got my bachelors in May and I’m very fortunate to be working in a full time position in my field. (It really beats working at Dominos). I started at my new job on June 28th this year and I work in mental health services for context.
So far, training has been going smoothly. In a perfect world, I should be able to call clients and shadow other employees next week.
However, I recently discovered that the work load is a loooot. It wouldn’t be an issue if I wasn’t accepted and plan to be a full time student in the fall for my graduate degree. I’m planning to take 3 classes and I know the work won’t be like undergraduate courses.
Fortunately, a couple weeks ago, the person in charge of my general training sessions was informing everyone at one that her department (HR) is looking to hire an assistant for her. I was intrigued by this and asked her for more details during break.
The job would basically be facilitating and helping with weekly job trainings as well as attend ambassador meetings. It sounds boring, but they seem like a very fun person to work with and the job is much less stressful opposed to my current one. I honestly think I’ll be a better fit there than where I currently work.
They sent me the application today and I’m currently filling it out. However, there are a few things in my mind. One, if I do get this job, I don’t want to leave my department and have them be completely out of the loop. And normally, I’d feel comfortable talking to my manager about this.
Sadly, I think I upset them today by not going into the office today. I chose not to since the caveat was to work on what they assigned me yesterday and I finished at home yesterday. Regardless, I’m still at fault and recognize that since I didn’t tell them. Tomorrow, I’m going in to have a discussion with my manager and HR (the very department I’m applying for). I doubt I’ll be severely punished, but it’s still not a good look nor do I want to sour an otherwise good relationship with my current manager.
I guess what I’m asking is if you guys have any tips for me as I go through this process. I know better than to not still give my current position my all in the meantime and to not expect that position being guaranteed for me. I know the department I work for has been a little short-staffed and one other person in my team transferred internally for the same reason I want to (that being graduate school). Any advice will be wonderful, thank you.
