Showing interest in a promotion has led to kind of a demotion. Is job satisfaction a justifiable reason to demote someone?

I'm not terribly happy in my work, but that doesn't effect my job performance or my colleagues. I went for a different role in the company to freshen up, try something new. My dislike for my current role unfortunately translated over in the interview and the feedback was given back to my area manager.

I've been told today that I'm being moved to another store in 2 and a half weeks because they need more deputy managers, even though I don't own a car so this would be an hour and a half walk every day. This info has been told to me through my direct manager via the area manager who's made this decision, so it feels like it's not up for discussion though I do fully intend to try and talk to her about it. 2 of my managers told the area manager I was not the right choice to go because of the travel situation, other people would even offer to take my place. I believe her reasoning is likely to either move me over as a 'fresh start' for me to reinvent myself bla bla bla and she can pat herself on the back about it, or either she loses a worker who 'didn't want the job anyway'. I don't like my job, I don't dislike my job, I'm comfortable in life, I get the work done quick and right. Genuinely, I am far from the worst worker and my team enjoy working with me. But I'm not going to shell out for a car and expenses for this job every month, because surely that would be like a demotion without justified reason?

I'm a bit lost and stuck, so any advice would be greatly appreciated as I'm currently searching the job market to weigh out my options and am up writing this when I only have 5 hours before I'm supposed to wake up for my next shift at 6am.

I think a job that would make me happy is one where I would be helping those in need who've done thing to deserve whatever situation life has thrown at them, and still be able to earn enough to live a humble life. So if you have any thoughts on that too, again I would appreciate it.

Thank you very, very much for taking the time to read this.

It's dumb to post this now since it'll get buried without me interacting back to responses as I'm going to try and sleep again. I will reply to you tomorrow though if you have questions so please bare with me.
