My boss (an attorney at a law firm) told me I was promoted from admin to a paralegal position and lied to me (I think?), so that I'd continue to do work out of the realm of my responsibility.

For over a year and some change I had been helping my boss at a law firm. I was hired as an admin in October of 2019 Split between two attorneys, the one attorney I'll be mentioning didn't really have a paralegal, the other did. He was assigned a paralegal in December to help him out with drafting and putting petitions together. In February of 2020, he found out she wasn't actually drafting or doing anything at all. She was fired and he ended up having to draft everything. I did not want to see our team fail as he and I were both recently hired so I offered to help him with the idea of me becoming a paralegal. I wanted to make a career for myself and help out our team because I don't know why but I just hate seeing my teammates failing.

He agreed to help build a case for the partners to promote me as a paralegal and said once we got out all of the pending cases that previous employee failed to do, he would put in a word for me. In one month I got out over 50 petitions. I worked my ass off. I got us caught up. Through March-July He kept telling me we just needed to get cases out and bill and be successful. August I followed up again, still nothing still doing paralegal work on top of admin work (I was split doing admin work for two attorneys), it was overwhelming but I persisted because I thought I was going to move forward with my career.

October is when we normally have reviews to go over pay raises and promotions. October came around and I was not promoted because the other attorney still needed me as an admin until the hired a new one in the spring. So I was left still split between attorneys and still doing paralegal work.

In Feb of 2021, I split off with the attorney (he was also given another paralegal (shes split between him and an attorney who is retiring) )and the other attorney got a new admin, my attorney told me I was promoted and I asked about change in compensation he said he still needed to tlak to the partners about that. All I asked for with my promotion was to be removed from admin front desk duties and a change in compensation.

This week (tuesday), I was emailed to help out with front desk duties while the receptionist was on vacation. This is something admins in the office do, so I forwarded that email to the attorney asking what was up with this because I thought I no longer had to do phone duties based on our conversation with my promotion. He never responded to my email and went about his day like normal.

Yesterday, the receptionist emailed again and because only 1 admin had responded to her, that admin no longer had to do the front desk duties while she was out, and three others (me included) was assigned days because we didn't respond. I forwarded that to my attorney asking him to please respond to me because I did not understand why I was being put on admin duties.

His response was " I will need to ask Partner 1. If I can’t get you off, let me know if there is anything that I can take off of your plate so that Monday morning does not set you back."

I was honestly pretty heated and probably responded poorly,

"I honestly thought that was part of my promotion or at least what we had discussed a while back, was to be removed from the phones and be bumped to a paralegal position, obviously we don’t have an admin on our team so X and I both are doing our own admin work, it’s a lot, but is doable. I’m still listed as an admin on our company phone list/website and my phone still gets front desk calls – I figured, HR has been busy and hasn’t updated things but now I’m just not sure if I was even promoted at all.

It feels like I took on more work with zero benefits. If I am going to be treated as an admin then I’d like to just stick with the admin work and I will have no problem doing the front desk when Receptionist is out and taking calls that come to my phone.

I didn’t respond to Receptionist’s first email because I thought I wasn’t supposed to be doing phones and now I feel like that looks bad on me for not responding."

this happened yesterday and he did not come to my desk at all, kept his door shut and its damn near 11am now and still no response/communication.

What do I do? Quit? I don't even feel like doing paralegal work now. I've been handed so many new case types now and I feel used. If this seems rambled I am sorry I'm just incredibly hurt and confusd.

TLDR; boss told me in person I was promoted, I told him the conditions of my promotion and conditions were definitely not met, but I still think he wants me to do the promotion work.
