Hi guys. I've never had a work experience this horrible before. Recently (about 1.5 months ago), I was accepted for an internship with a company that does work in nanotech/synthetic chemistry. I literally relocated to the other side of the country to take this internship. Immediately, I felt like I was at home. I finally had a job related to my education (chemistry/nanoscience) and everyone out here treated me like family. Everything was going well for the entire duration of my internship with the exception of one reaction that went wrong near the end, which I thought was unfortunate, but not critical. Maybe it was critical after all and the cost of contents and labor that went into that reaction were so high that they decided I wasn't suitable for the job when we failed to elicit the target product from the reaction. Anyway, regardless of that issue, I was learning everything I needed to learn and I was understanding everything which they trained me. So it came as a huge surprise today when I was pulled into an office where the managers had all been waiting for me, where they explained that today was my last day and that I was no longer needed to come in to work. They never said why, only that the "project was finished." I feel terrible and like I've lost a huge opportunity with this company. It's literally my dream job and I was so ready to do everything they wanted me to do, independently, efficiently, carefully and get promoted to a full-time employee. But now that's never going to happen. I'm shocked and I don't know what to do. I feel broken and hopeless. This is the worst thing that's happened to me in a long time and I also feel humiliated, like I wasn't good enough. I don't even know what I could have done differently.
Sorry for the rant. I can't believe I just lost the opportunity of a lifetime and I don't even know why. How do I get passed this? I loved everyone I was working with and they wouldn't even let me back into the labs to say goodbye...
