To put more context, this is for a state government job in New Jersey, so I know the process probably varies from state to state, but I assume the timeline is generally the same all around.
So I had an interview on June 23 for the position, which I feel went pretty well. On June 24, one of my references got a call from them (described it as they were calling for a character reference). And on June 28, another one of my references was contacted. I am not sure if the 3rd reference was contacted yet. I've gotten the impression that references are the last stage of the hiring process and are only contacted if you are one of the finalists. I thought it was interesting they were contacted so soon after the interview, especially for a government job.
But anyway, how long does it usually take before an offer is extended? If I don't hear back after a few weeks would it be safe to assume they selected someone else or could it still take a long time?
