Do employers even care about volunteer/extracurricular experience?

I was told growing up that having volunteer experience looks very good on a resume, ended up involved with my schools accounting association, lent a hand with a faith based organizations, helped at an animal rescue shelter etc. Yet despite several years of this, it has not helped me land a job whatsoever (not that I was volunteering simply to land an eventual job, mind you.)
