Several months ago I got what turned out to be an incredibly toxic job. It was fine at first, but recently I’ve been having serious problems with the management. The work I complete is never good enough and my manager constantly contradicts herself on what is expected, resulting in paragraphs of angry texts on my days off over very minor issues. It went as far as I was accused of making a derogatory comment to another employee which never happened in any capacity. I have never had problems like this at a job and have always been told I’m a good worker. Needless to say, I want out.
I have another job and would like to leave immediately. However, it says in my “contract” (which is one page stating my hours and discounts I get from the company) this exactly:
I understand that all team members are “at will” employees and reserve the right to resign at any time. “Company” reserves the right to dismiss an employee at any time.
“Company” requires a 30 day notice before resigning.
Am I just a moron or does that completely contradict itself? Ideally I would give NO notice, but I’m willing to give them two weeks. The idea of a month more of being berated in my free-time is very depressing.
I should note this is a low skill, hourly job. I won’t go into specifics for my privacy but it’s the kind of job teenagers have, so it’s not like they invested a significant amount of training or resources on me.
So, can they do anything legally if I do not give the entire 30 day notice? I’m not looking to ever be rehired and I wouldn’t be comfortable using these folks as a reference because I’m clearly not liked or wanted there.
