I am a cashier at a supermarket. The first day (yesterday) I was supposed to get trained, but I really didn't until the end of my shift. It was so stressful because I stood behind the register not having a clue what to do about cash, bananas, liquor, items that didn't have a barcode, etc. I ripped the receipt the first time because I wasn't patient, I scanned things twice, typed in the wrong item code, weighed items with my hand.... I had a bagger there to help train me, but I felt so embarrassed and super slow at scanning stuff. I know that if I had been trained beforehand it would've been easier, but you have to practice by doing.
Today (my second day) went better. The bagger was really nice and gave me so many tips!! It was awesome and I got a bit better. I started memorizing some codes, basically was punching in most things all by myself, handling cash, coupons, liquor, all by myself.... Yet, I still find that I'm a slow scanner. I try to look for the barcode and sometimes have to turn the thing around or sometimes I cannot for the life of me get something to scan - ugh!!! I worry I look like such a fool and hold up the line. I hope I really do get faster because I don't want to be a month in and have to be still struggling to find the barcode. I scanned something twice 3 times today, too :(
Any advice appreciated! Is it normal to feel slow/have trouble scanning? I feel bad about what I voided today too. I hope the manager doesn't speak to me.... Anyways, Thanks!
