What am I trying to prove? Leaving current job, boss is putting a lot of things on my record I disagree with.

Strap in your seatbelts, it might be a long one. But if you like quitting stories, you might like this:

I put in my notice, I'll be leaving soon. Officially it's because I'm getting a new job somewhere else. But the main reason I'm leaving is due to the negativity and blame that's been put on me since November. 5 years I put into this place, and it seems like the last 6 months have culminated in me being the butt-end of each problem this place has had. If the list of items in my most recent Corrective Action Plan weren't the nail in the coffin, whatever follow-up meeting I have might be it, depending on what information I'm given.

About half of the issues in the CAP are understandable. But there are swaths of information that are omitted to make it seem like I'm totally to blame for each problem. I wish to make the record clear, so that it doesn't seem like they're just getting rid of a problem child. Four people have recently left in quick succession, and while they all may have their main reason, I can definitively say they all left in addition due to the issues that have come out of upper management. One was told he couldn't move up any higher and there's no room for him to grow anymore; he got a higher paying job closer to his relatives. One was informed they were essentially a punk kid who has no rights; he got a full ride to law school and plans to work in criminal defence. One was told, despite working in her field for 30+ years that she was doing a shit job and was about to get a pretty bad review; she left before they could do that.

The fourth, me, has just had enough. The stress is not worth the paycheck, and I'll be taking a chance on a new place because there's clearly nothing left for me here. I'll essentially make a little more, it's closer to home, but really I'm leaving because this place has squeezed me of all my cares. Plus, the new place will give me more time at home, so I can formulate whatever plan I have, which so far is to start my own business.

There's essentially two reasons I'm staying until my noted end date:

  1. I was given approved PTO next week, and plan to use it while I can (I have over 300 hours banked, so getting 40 of it would be nice).
  2. I have worked enough to get 60 hours of PTO paid out to me. If I give proper notice, I should be paid that out as I'm leaving.

The first should be no issue. It's been approved, despite there being a rule that you can't use PTO in your final 2 weeks, but they have broken that rule in the past. I think they're making an exception for me, mainly due to my immediate superior being pretty chill. It's his boss, and their boss I am not in a good relationship with.

The second, I'm not so sure about. In the P&P Manual it states: "Salaried employees, resigning their employment in good standing with [Company name], will be paid their PTO balance...provided the employee has given the required notice." Which in my case is 2 weeks. If I'm led to believe what I've read on my payroll change form, and the CAP I'm about to sign (or refuse to sign), I don't think I'm going to be in good standing, according to my boss's boss.

I'm going to have a short meeting about it, I think tomorrow, where I ask if there's any reason for me to believe I'm not in good standing. If I'm not, and I'm explicitly told I won't be getting my PTO paid out due to this reason, I may just leave right on the spot. It's not worth milking this place for one more minute in my opinion if they're really going to treat me like this.

But honestly, what am I trying to prove? It's clear they don't want me, do I really need to leave this place kicking and screaming? I could literally leave my badge here tonight, not show up tomorrow, and nothing more will come of it (aside from me having to tap into my savings). I won't do that because I do think there's an unspoken rule to not be that guy, even in the scenario I'm in. I could just sign the CAP's, keep my head down, and leave at the day I told them. Who knows, maybe they will give me the 60 hours I am so desperate to keep. It'll pay for new tires on my car, and then maybe a little. Anyone wanna give me tips?
