Just got laid off with a WARN so I have 2 months of 40 hour pay checks and get to keep my insurance. How long should I rest?
I worked for a massive company that just was ordered to pay $13M for leaking sensitive information to a different country (hint-hint) and we also lost our government contract to make N95 masks. So over a thousand temp and permanent workers are suddenly without work. The temps, unfortunately, got nothing but a stern "go away" the Friday before last, and now the permanent employees were coralled this morning and laid off.
Fortunately, because they laid off so many people, the company was required to give us WARN (workers adjustment and retraining notification act) benefits, which include 2 months of continuous pay, benefits, and opportunities for job training in other fields.
Now, I had been itching to get out of the company for the last couple of months and as such have been looking for a career change for some time now. I have had a couple interviews with a temp agency as I am seeking to change industries entirely so I believe a temp agency is the best way to get experience. Should I take advantage of the following 2 months and enjoy the summer while perhaps taking online classes to better my candidacy in my desired field before looking for another position? Or should I try to jump into something immediately? I will be required to take June 14th off for personal reasons, but otherwise I have no reason not to work beyond R&R and working on my mental health.
Also, I have significant social struggles including social anxiety. As well as some sound and touch sensitivities associated with autism, and difficulty remaining focused on tasks for significant amounts of time due to adhd. What might be a good industry for me if office clerk/ document clerk doesn't work out? Should I be trying to avoid social situations or jumping in head first and hope for the best? I have pretty much only warehouse and fast food experience and have no desire to lead a team or sell things. Am I SOL?
