I hope this is the right place for this, please bear with me as I wanted to give the full story so it’s a little long.
I received a job offer after being only a freelancer/contractor for the past year or so, and for a dream job and company at that! I received the offer call, as well as the offer letter and was all but set to sign and begin the next step of my career. For context, this is about a remote US-based role.
Here’s where the “problem” began: I am currently staying with my partner in Canada (as a visitor/tourist, legally with a visitor record since before COVID-19 if you’re wondering) so I don’t have Canadian permanent residency, citizenship, or anything like that—I solely have US citizenship. Since there was an equipment release, I asked the recruiter (my only point of contact throughout the entire interview process) if it were possible to have it sent to Canada. I mainly asked this so that a package containing a laptop isn’t just sitting idly on the doorstep at my US address before I can get it.
She responds saying she needs to ask HR, explaining she’s a relatively new recruiter and that she’s never had this issue, so she wants to be 100% sure that she gives me accurate information. We have a phone call where she explains that I need to come back to the US for the job, and that they need to amend my offer letter to state that I will do so. I thought this was a bit odd as in addition to not addressing my original question about the laptop, I had emails with her saying that I was only a visitor/planning on coming back to the US. I also clarified this on the call. Also, I didn’t think to ask about the laptop because the subject was so focused about me returning to the US. But I thought sure, that’s fine—they need to cover all their bases legally I suppose? The call closes with the recruiter saying to expect an edited offer letter in the morning.
The next morning I hear nothing back, so I follow up in the late afternoon to ask via email how everything is doing. She responds by saying I need to have a phone call with her and an HR lead. We schedule the call and the HR lead calls to tell me that they need to rescind my offer because of legal issues of me not being able to work for them in Canada, even citing that I was acting against their company values of trust, and the expectation of honesty in the workplace. That it was because I did not bring up that I was in Canada until the offer phase. What? I tried explaining to her that I’m only in Canada as a visitor but she was dismissive and ended the call quickly. I tried following up with the recruiter to see if there was some sort of mix up, to no response.
Cue one of the worst weeks of my life, as it really feels like something got miscommunicated, causing me a dream job, plus I never was asked once for clarification. To get some sort of closure, I contacted the chief people officer—the exec who responds to every Glassdoor review—for a more detailed explanation on why the offer was rescinded, and she sends me a coldly worded email saying that they rescinded it because I didn’t disclose that I was not returning to the US until the offer phase, that I lied about being based in the city that I live in, and that they cannot accommodate the role being based in Canada. She also touts the company’s values about trust and transparency. This is even more confusing as I’ve always been based in the same US city—it would even be a lie for me to say I’m based in Canada. I sent her a response with email snippets between the recruiter and I detailing how I am a visitor only and will be back in the US for the role. No response but I sent it on Friday so we’ll see... I’m not hopeful.
All of this feels especially terrible because it seems my reputation to this company was completely tarnished so I’d have no chance of working for them in the future. The group of people I met throughout the interview process were really genuine and talented, and I was really looking forward to working with them. I’m not sure if I should reach out to the director who would’ve been my boss (to thank him for the interview, etc.) because he probably also thinks that I lied through the pipeline of HR telling him that they rescinded my offer, etc.
TL;DR: Got a dream job and offer letter, only for it to be rescinded because of false information. Not sure what to do other than move on?
So my question is—what do you recommend I do next? I’ve been applying to other jobs but I am seriously at a loss and don’t feel like I did anything wrong to lose this one. I’d would love to hear your thoughts, in addition to any advice you may have.
