Sorry in advance for the long rant/post.
I started a new job about 6 months ago at a large tech company based in the northeast US. Salary is competitive, benefits are good, location is great. Due to the pandemic I was onboarded remotely and had to train myself on a lot of my job’s processes and the company’s proprietary tech. The first few months went well; I was working a lot (50+ hour weeks) but didn’t mind because I liked the role and working with my manager.
It’s worth noting here that I did not report to my manager, we both reported to a director. My manager and I worked together on a client account. A few months in, my manager transferred to a different department, and I was left working the account without a manager, reporting just to the director. Since then (I now understand why my manager left and I do not blame them) I’ve been routinely pulling 60+ hour weeks just to complete the minimum amount of work that my director demands for the account. I no longer enjoy the job, and dread logging on most days.
My director has unrealistic expectations for what can be completed in a day, and whenever I push back on how much I am required to do, I am told “Everyone in your position feels that way.” or “These tasks shouldn’t be taking you that long.” etc. It boils down to a lot of negative feedback with no concrete direction on how to improve other than “work faster”. I have since learned that this director is known for having a high burnout / turnover rate.
My work/life balance has disappeared. I regularly work 12-15 hour days, and there has been no push to hire a new manager. I have begun to dislike my job and REALLY resent my boss. I want to transfer to work under my previous manager, but I have to wait until I have worked at the company for a year before I can move internally (this was offered pending I get the appropriate approvals). I am burning the candle at both ends and am not sure how much longer I can reasonably sustain this.
I have thought about applying for new jobs, but worry that 1. Finding a new job will be difficult right now (Covid and competing with new grads) and 2. This is my second job out of college (I was at my first for about ~16 months), and leaving after 6 months would look like job hopping.
I like the company, have been given a lot of responsibility early in my career, and am gaining excellent work experience. However, the stress of the job, the stress of an overly demanding boss, and working long hours are taking a toll on my physical and mental health. I’m not sure whether I should tough it out for another few months to move internally, or if I should start looking elsewhere for jobs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
