I hope this is the correct subreddit to get some info and advice about this and appreciate any insight anyone can provide. I was informed by the employer that they were letting me go but my separation is in two months, when I will no longer have my health benefits and will get a severance payout. I was wondering if this is normal since usually I hear people are laid off and immediately finish up that day. I have always been a top performer with great performance reviews every year, and they confirmed it was not performance-related but that a senior level manager was no longer needed in the department.
Secondly, no one except for my immediately report knows I am laid off. I was told that my priority is to find a new job and to close out my laptop. I found out the company is telling everyone that I have just been moved to another project so as far as my team is concerned, I am just ghosting them and no longer working with the team. This seems odd to me and puts me in an awkward position since I don't know what to tell colleagues when they reach out. I don't want to hurt my relationships and my reputation with all these colleagues I have worked with for many years and wondering why they are not just told the truth that I've been laid off? Does anyone have experience with this and is it normal?
I'm also afraid to tell anyone in case it affects my severance before the separation date. I am interviewing and the timing of the layoff is perfect for my personal situation, so I'm not upset but I am just uncomfortable with the secrecy of this whole thing and don't want to burn bridges with close colleagues who may think I just disappeared. Would appreciate any insight anyone may have. Thank you.
