I tried a complete career change, and I absolutely regret it! Here's why...

Late last year, I negotiated a mutual separation from a job after some operational disagreements. I'm not usually someone who can "do nothing". During my downtime, I was antsy and wanted explore some new avenues. Given my experience and skills, I thought segueing into accounting would be a good fit for me. So I started an online program and excelled in the classes I was taking. I started looking for a new, lower level job to get my foot into the door. I thought that any ol' job would do, because I would be getting exposure to the more advanced aspects of the field through my work. Boy, was I wrong.

I Regret the Pay Cut

I was making more than double what I'm making in this entry level role. While I've been able to make it work with my family due to possessing little debt, I miss the stability of the extra cushion. I can't save as much. I can't go out as much. I have to plan around absolutely everything, including big home expenses and healthcare costs. And do you think that my employer cares? Not one single bit. We agreed to an entry-level salary, and they're going to keep me locked in as long as they possibly can. Essentially, it's probably going to take me another 10 years to come close to the same level that I was already at a year ago, if I remain on this path.

Don't think for one minute that you're on an accelerated path

I made the assumption that since I come to this company with already 15 years of experience in various corporate roles, including financial analysis, that I would be a cut above the rest and on a more rapid path for promotion. Not at all. There are younger folks than me with fewer credentials getting promoted to higher levels based solely on seniority with the company. My outside experience means absolutely nothing to them.

I Am Bored as Hell

When I took the job, I expected that I would be doing lower level work than I was used to. However, I also fantasized about the idea that I would be working with higher level people in the org to start networking with and learning some of the higher level concepts and applying them in real life. The reality of the situation is that they hired someone to process, and they don't care care what other interests I have or what goals I have to advance. I was hired for this role, and that is the only thing they care about with regards to me.

More is Expected of Me Than My Younger Colleagues

I have far more experience, skills, and overall expertise than my younger colleagues who are 10-15 years younger. My team lead is aware of this, and often wishes to dump more responsibilities on me without the additional title or pay increase. So while they want to exploit my talents and expertise, they also are paying the same entry-level salary as everyone else.

Don't be the smartest person in the room

Again, big mistake here. An ideal that I've held on to tightly for quite some time is not allowing yourself to stagnate and eventually become the smartest person in the room. A lot of useful growth comes from being surrounded by other smart people who can bestow their wisdom onto you. I made the assumption that I would be surrounded by more experienced accountants, veterans in the field so to speak. Instead, I'm mostly surrounded by fresh college grads who are worried about which exhaust they're going to put in their car and when they're taking their next road trip or which bars they can't wait to hit up. I'm gaining absolutely nothing from this experience, other than learning what it's like to be 20-something again.

Needless to say, I'm on the job hunt again, seeking positions closer to the pay and level that I was at before. I wanted to share my experiences with you about my recent attempt at a career change in hopes that it sheds some valuable insights for a change you may be considering.
