Are you allowed to apply for a different role within the same company that you work for within a year?

For example, let's say I work at McDonald's as a cashier for 3 months. I end up getting my degree and I see a corporate role at McDonald's that I'm interested in. Am I able to be accepted for an interview for that role? I've searched through Google, and saw someone say that jumping internally within a year is not possible at most companies. Is this true?
