After interview, told I have a “certified offer” - but that the position was filled? Has anyone ever heard of that??

After a preliminary phone interview I had a virtual interview with 4 managers at various levels, and it was FANTASTIC. I’m telling you, I killed it. One interview told me he’s never interviewed anyone with as much experience as I have, and said I’m better suited for a higher position! I waited to hear from the recruiters and didn’t... and didn’t... and didn’t.

Over the next 3 weeks I sent several emails asking for feedback and checking whether any update was available. Once they replied to say they’d reply by the end of that week. Still nothing. Finally after sending yet another email, one of the recruiters called me immediately to say my interview feedback was great, and that I have a confirmed offer - but that they had been on boarding a new HR rep, and the position I’d interviewed for had been filled...? I was honestly so confused I probably didn’t ask all the questions I should have, because what the hell?

Anyway the recruiter assured me the next open position is mine, and I’m welcome to browse openings but he’ll also be looking for something I’m suited for. Well, since that strange phone call there have been two different postings that would have been ideal for me, one was literally exactly the same job I’m doing for my current company, and both times I’ve applied and emailed the recruiter and gotten cursory replies at best that the positions were filled. Now he’s not even responding at all...

Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? Was calling me instead of replying to cover the fact that someone had dropped the ball and he didn’t want to put that in writing? Should I assume this is hopeless and keep looking? I hate my current job so much that I daydream daily of giving my notice. I was so excited for this position with one of the biggest companies in the world but this just seems like such nonsense.
