To take an offer, or not?

I currently work for a very large company that does not allow for telecommuting in the state that my family wants to move to. I recently got a job offer from a start up, that would be a remote telecommuting position. I’m planning to counter offer their initial offer based on my current company’s annual review/compensation process that happened during my interview process and that could offset some of the financial differences in their benefit package.

I still feel torn - I have never worked for a start up and I feel “comfortable” where I am in my company and have stable job outlook. If I could telecommute with my current employer, I would stay. I fear the number of hours and the “immersion” that this new opportunity will require, and given that currently due to covid I am the only income earner at home, I fear this opportunity might be risky. I do, however, really believe that the start up has a great product and position in the industry (healthcare) and it could offer an opportunity to grow with a company that’s small still.

Has anyone transitioned from large (25k employees+) to a start up and had a positive or negative experience? I’ve of course discussed with family and done a lot of thinking myself, but figured I’d post here to see what feedback I could get.
