tldr: looking for advice on how to put in my notice without something new lined up with a team that is already down a person
I'm in my first professional role out of college and haven't had a job where I've had to put in a formal notice before. I'm trying to move out of state and have been interviewing with a bunch of places but don't have anything lined up yet. I'm moving with or without a job, and was waiting until I had my living situation solidified before putting in my notice. However, someone else on my team who does the same work as me left a few weeks ago. I saw the job posting for their replacement and it's starting out at more than I make after over a year here (which is already severely underpaid to begin with), and that was kind of the last straw. I'm planning to put in my notice to give myself more time and energy to focus on job/apartment hunting. I have a really good savings account and do freelance work, so financials aren't an issue and there won't be complete gap on my resume.
Hoping for some tips on putting in my notice since this is not only the first time I'm formally resigning from a job but there's the added pressure (and guilt) of the team already being short-staffed and I don't have a "good excuse" for leaving like a new job. I'm waiting for my supervisor to come back from time off and will set up a quick meeting with them. I'm just not sure what to say/how honest to be. Do I mention anything about moving/not having a job lined up/being upset about a new position starting with a higher compensation than me? Do I just keep it vague and mention something about pursuing new professional and personal goals? I'm trying not completely lose my chance to use them for a reference since I'm still looking for jobs.
