Manager threatening to fire me over attempting to call off since my best friend killed themselves today.

Hi,

I’ve worked at this gas station for a year~ roughly. It has a really high turnover rate, people don’t show up, people quit and leave the building unattended, it’s insane.

I’ve successfully called off 2 times in my “career” here. Earlier today I found out my best friend of 9 years, commit suicide. I just spoke with him yesterday.. it’s greatly affecting me for obvious reasons.

I texted my manager since she doesn’t answer the phone (and usually doesn’t answer texts) and explained could she please find a cover and the reason why.

She replied with:

“Look I’m sorry that happened to you, but if you don’t find coverage or go in tonight and I have to cut my weekend short. I’m sorry I’ll have to find someone who will have to find someone who will show up when scheduled...”

I didn’t even have time to reply before she sent another text saying “it’s my birthday this week.” As if that makes anything better?

I’m lost as to what to do - or even reply with. I feel incredibly disrespected and almost like it’d be disrespecting myself to even show up now. I’ve never had a boss talk to me in such a selfish, horrible, way and completely minimize my feelings this way before.

Update: I now asked her so since I can’t come in tonight you’re telling me not to come tomorrow? And she said “can’t and choosing not to are two different things, but yes..”

Mind you we just had the only other semi-overnight clerk quit without notice two days ago. id like to just add this too: this manager is not like any other I’ve had, she’s completely unreliable- like I said she won’t even answer texts or calls from any of us, she won’t find shift coverage so say day shift doesn’t show you’re stuck there until anyone shows up.
