Is it me, or are the several rounds of interviews required nowadays overkill?

Last week, I had an initial screening interview with HR for a local company for which I am very interested in working. During that interview, the HR person told me I would be required to undergo 3 more interviews after my meeting with her before the company would make a determination. And supposedly I was only one of 3 candidates at that time, but more have applied since my meeting with HR.

Luckily, the first round was scheduled quite quickly, and I went through that today. When I asked for a timeline at the end of today’s interview, the Hiring Manager said he did not know a timeline since it is a brand new position, but most likely it will be a month before I hear whether I’m moving onto the third round. And don’t forget, even if I move on to the 3rd round, there will still be a 4th round I’d have to make it to after that! At this rate, I’ll start working in June or July if I make it all the way.

I know this is not the Hiring Manager’s fault, but this is insane. Supposedly I am part of a very small candidate pool, and you’d think they would want the position filled as soon as possible. I also have another company I’m waiting to hear from next week, and while I’m more interested in the new company, I’m going to have to take the other job if I get it and tell this new company thanks but no thanks. I cannot turn down the other job just in case the new company wants me in 3 months.

It’s not only this company. I finally received my rejection letter yesterday from a different company, after undergoing 2 video interviews and then having to complete a 20-minute presentation on statistical data to present to the entire team in the third round, which I stayed up all night working on. This entire process, from my initial phone screening to the rejection letter, took a little bit over a month. I guess I’m overreacting, but I think it’s completely cruel to do this to candidates who have their own schedules and other offers, bills to pay, etc. My parents and grandparents would usually undergo a short phone screening, an in-person interview a couple of days later, and then the decision would be made within a week or two. But no, not anymore. It’s crazy.
