So I recently got offered a job at a health shop. They sell smoothies and teas and stuff. I have developed a relationship with the owner and he’s a great guy. I decided to reach out and see if a job is available. He said yes and we sat down and had a conversation- it went great. Everything about this place is exactly what I wanted. It has great vibes, great people, great hours, and it will lead me into my field of work after college. The only thing is that the pay is very shady to me. He explained if I work there, I am an independent contractor using 1099, even though I have designated hours and am basically an employee. I thought nothing of it till I looked into it. It seems he does this in order to not have to pay social security. I am also making below minimum wage at this point. He also gave me the option to do the above as well as buy a license to sell their product they use. I won’t name which one it is, but I’m sure you can guess. Basically it’s a pyramid scheme. I’m thinking of taking the job, and eventually asking for higher pay, and not do the licensing. So basically I am wondering if this is something that is safe to do or if I should pursue other job options. Is this legit and I’m being crazy or should I be concerned? To me, I want to work there but I am a little sketched out.
