[ILLINOIS] I got hired at Burlington part time in the back, but so far I've been working Mon - Sat for 3wks, working 40+ hrs. Is this right?
So as mentioned, I've been hired working in the back which consists of opening boxes and organizing items into racks, putting racks away, etc. I thought I was going to be a cashier but they put me in the back which I don't mind.
However, at orientation they said working in the back meant we didn't have a set schedule but should be expected to be available Mon - Fri.
But ever since my first day, I've been working 40+ hours/week as a part timer and it seems like we're expected to work Mon - Sat.
They just had 6 people quit but also increased store hours from 7am - 12am my first week working there. So I don't know if working on Saturdays has been because of those 2 factors or what. They are definitely understaffed.
I thought I'd be fine with this schedule as I really need the money, but it's been really draining to only have 1 day off. My best friend wants to go on a road trip in 3 weeks and asked me to take off Fri - Sat but I'm nervous that they might deny this request? Since I'm still pretty new. And I'm confused if I should ask for Sun off as well, since I won't be back home until Sunday. Not that I've worked Sunday's here.
I also need oral surgery soon and probably will need a day or 2 also off to recover and I'm nervous thinking about requesting time off in general. When I first applied to the job, I did pretty much select open availability for every day of the week because I was so desperate.
I understand I wouldn't have PTO but it's been a long time since I've worked in a corporate retail setting, and I'm kind of just worried I'll get flack for requesting time off more than once within a certain time period? That's just the kind of attitude I feel I see from the asst and main managers cause they've also been working 6-7 day work weeks.
I appreciate any insight! Thank you.
