How should I negotiate? Existing job

I've been an intern with my existing company for over a year. It turns out that they were supposed to let me go back in December, but, they lost track of me because I was the only intern in my department.

Anyhow, my boss wants to keep me and is trying to get me a fulltime position.

This is my first job in this field after a career change. Previously, I worked retail and for a public library system.

I'm really underpaid at the moment, even for an intern. Most interns in my field are making $20 an hour, but, I'm making $12. Unfortunately, I graduated at the wrong time, you know, middle of Covid, and had to take any internship I could find.

I've continued to apply for places- but, the situation is that nobody is calling me back. The place I'm working for really appreciates what I do, they had gone through a bunch of temps before who couldn't cut it. So, there's a tiny chance I could actually get a decent offer.

BUT, there's a really good chance I'm going to get an offer for an accountant role at some disappointing $13 an hour nonsense. Or, worse, a salaried position that works out to $13 an hour but then requires overtime.. lol

How in the world do you negotiate when what you do is valuable but at the same time, you don't have any other options?
