Fired (upper level management): lost on how to move forward

Thank you so much to anyone who reads this.

Allow me to clarify that I’m not the person in this situation. Basically, my connection with him is that he gave me the opportunity to advance in the company which has led to where I am today. He acted as a mentor/championed my growth which was rare where I used to work.

Anyways, in terms of corporate hierarchy, he was one level below c-suite. His industry knowledge within supply chain operations is exceptional, but is relatively niche (food/beverage). The other part that sucks is that he doesn’t have a college degree - and while his role is technical - it is all self taught and extremely specific to this company. He had worked at the company for 15 years (only place he’s ever worked, has grown to over 5000 employees), so his connections outside of it are limited. Also, the role he had is one that would 99& of the time require a degree (preferably engineer with an MBA) at other companies within the industry.

So wtf do you do when you’re let go from a company after 15 years as an upper level manager with no degree or hard transferable skills? He’s one of those guys that is an exceptional talent and leader, but you’re not going to see that on a resume. I’m currently a grad student where alumni working in operations is deep/extremely well known, so I’d love to connect him, but given the concerns mentioned earlier I’m not sure how far it’d take him. If it matters, he was fired because of politics (new CEO, direct manager with different vision, etc).

Thanks again guys. This was challenging for me to explain so I appreciate clarifying questions and obviously your insight.

TLDR: upper management employee who has only worked for one company for 15 years recently fired. He started from the bottom, and never completed a degree in the process. His role at other companies in the industry are occupied by engineers and/or those with advanced degrees in business. He's lost on how to search for a new job because of these factors plus the company was pretty much his life.

Edit - for reference, I'm asking the question to Reddit because the guy's too stubborn/proud to ask people for help
