I work in construction management. My current position's contract ends in June. It is not just me. My firm's contract ends in June. It am well compensated in the low 6 six figures. Not over the top but comfortable.
Back in October I discussed the end of my work contract with my boss and another executive at the firm. They gave me as good an assurance as you can that the firm had or would have opportunities in the coming months. Up until this point, my firm managed to not lay or furlough anyone. That changed in early December when they were forced to just that. It was tough.
Under normal job conditions I wouldnot be too worried but these are not normal job conditions. A month ago I reached out to my HR person about my concerns and they in turn reached out to another senior executive who contacted me immediately. Again he gave me decent assurances that the firm had and will have projects that I should be a good fit for. He added the caveat "Of course there are no guarantees.". Other people in my company feel at least somewhat confident that they will be moved onto on of the other projects.
Meanwhile I am still working hard, even going into our field office at least 3x a week.
I am not taking any chances: I have cleaned up my resume and my Linkedin profile. I reached out to a few recruiters that have helped me in the past as well as some contacts I have. I need to keep this on the DL because I do not want my current firm knowing that I might be looking elsewhere.
I am a worryer by nature so all of this has my life in some turmoil. I recently purchased my own condo after a painful divorce two years ago. I made sure to keep my monthly payments as low as possible and I am watching my expenses now. I do not live lavisly. I don't even own a car.
I do not want to keep pestering the people at my current firm about the opportunities so I don't have anyone I can vent my concerns with. I just thought people here might be able to give me some encouragement and advice.
